If you're reading this as a preliminary step to possibly moving your family into the Dover High School District- your kids deserve better.

I am a current student. I sorta like the classes, however, I wish there were more class options and more clubs and activities.

And if you're that worried about it, Mrs. Williams (who, for the record, was never anything else than a sweetheart to me) has retired.

When you have a staff of people who can't get jobs in better districts, and not enough checks and balances within the system, the students suffer.

I don't think you can reasonably expect a public school in an area like Dover Plains to compare to a school in a well-funded area in the city. That said I think Dover does a reasonably good job given that it's a semi-rural public school. There are definitely people in the system who in no way belong there, but there are also dedicated and talented teachers and staff who stay in the area to work because it's their home. I can only speak from my own experience, but I got into a good college and I did pretty well there, and to me that means DHS did its job. Now, did it help that I had supportive parents and personal ambition? Absolutely. And I was an avid reader so I supplemented my education somewhat. If you want a really outstanding education that does everything for you, yes, you will have to look elsewhere, but 1) you will pay for it, either in property values or private school tuiton, and 2) DHS imparts enough of the basics to get along if you're willing to go the extra mile to turn a mediocre education into a good one.

And that has always stuck with me, coloring my opinion of Dover's terribly undertrained staff.

After observing and student teaching within New York City districts, I've realized that a Dover High School education is essentially a joke.

One major gripe: the English curriculum. The (low) standard of literature being read at the high school level is appalling and there's really no excuse for that.
